2009-11-17 [Linderel]: Ooo. *haunt*
2009-11-17 [Linderel]: :D
2009-11-17 [Jitter]: On 2nd thought I think I can handle one book per week as well :3
Do trilogies count as one book or 3?
2009-11-17 [windowframe]: I count books as physical objects, so if I have a Trilogy that's been put in one book, I'd count it as one. On the other hand, if I read a copy of War and Peace that had been divided into two separate books, I'd count it as two, but I'll leave it up to you, really. :)
2009-11-17 [nehirwen]: I often read a book a day (or per 2 days) for a week and then nothing for many weeks. 30 sounds good for me atm. :p
2009-11-17 [Linderel]: *picks the ultimate number*
2009-11-18 [Duke Devlin]: Rawrrrrr yay. ^^
2009-11-18 [Trennas]: wow, you people sure read a lot XD I read like 10 books a year at the most? XD In my defence, I seem to have lost all the spare time I had, which is when the reading usually took place :p
2009-11-18 [hanhepi]: i may readjust my number before the first of the year, i just kinda picked a number.
2009-11-18 [Trennas]: okay, contemplating about joining up with a minimal amount of books, but I has a question!
I'm still in the middle of a book, and I think I may finish it somewhere in the next few weeks, but since it's so close to 2010 already, can I still add it to the list? It's such a fun book it would be a shame not to include it XD
2009-11-18 [windowframe]: I suppose I can let you off one book. :P Also - if you start a book at the end of 09 and finish it in 2010, I'll leave it up to you guys individually as to whether you want to include that book on your list or not. :) (though I probably would)
2009-11-18 [Trennas]: hmmmmokay, sounds reasonable ^^
2009-11-18 [Cillamoon]: Sweet, thank you Silver!!
2009-11-18 [Rainbow Dragonflies]: Hmm... I may join in on this. :D
2009-11-18 [Trennas]: Cool thing about the review button! Didn't even know we had that feature!
2009-11-18 [All_Most PUNK]: *reads many books till only one chapter is left and lets them rest till 2010*
2009-11-18 [Lothuriel]: I signed up for 5 books. I love to read but, with 3 jobs, 3 kids and a house to take care of, it usually takes me a while to finish a book.
2009-11-18 [Trennas]: yeah me too, better too few than too many in this case XD
I'm gonna read a little bit tonight though. It's still early for a change and I'm feeling like it :)
2009-11-18 [Lothuriel]: I am just finishing up reading The Path of Daggers...agai
2009-11-18 [All_Most PUNK]: 5 books? 5 BOOKS? I can read that many books in my sleep!
2009-11-18 [Lothuriel]: :( I just can't seem to find the time.
2009-11-18 [All_Most PUNK]: When you sleep :P
2009-11-18 [Lothuriel]: I could use osmosis?
2009-11-18 [All_Most PUNK]: Or a robot light on your bed table.
2009-11-18 [Lothuriel]: That might work too, hehe
2009-11-19 [Duke Devlin]: I might up mine... I mean, I will have all summer. XD And uni summers are LONG. 8D
2009-11-19 [Trennas]: I don't have those any more XD I miss my summers XD
2009-11-22 [Duke Devlin]: Awhh. :( I'd give ya mine... But it's a tough thing to wrap...
2009-11-22 [▲.]: I'm so excited to choose my books! Perhaps I should begin my list now.
2009-11-22 [All_Most PUNK]: I should start buying 50 pages books...
2009-11-27 [Duke Devlin]: I'm just gonna go with the flow. :P I have a MASSIVE list of books to read (including ones I own, and those I don't) already. :P
2009-11-27 [▲.]: Good luck, Duke!
2009-12-03 [All_Most PUNK]: Jah, you went with a good number, Mir.
2009-12-03 [Mirime]: Yep ^_^ we'll see how I do.
2009-12-03 [All_Most PUNK]: You'll do well :D
2009-12-04 [▲.]: I've already made changes to my wiki~!
2009-12-04 [Cillamoon]: Oooo nice!!! That's a great idea, map out what you are going to read, me thinks I should do that as well! It looks great Cici darlin!
2009-12-04 [Viking]: I've been adding "planned reading" to my wiki, but I've not used pictures. I feel like such a slacker...
2009-12-04 [sweet.tx.tea]: I really should plan mine out, eh?
2009-12-04 [Cillamoon]: I think it would be fun to do that, yeah!
2009-12-04 [All_Most PUNK]: No chance I do that :P
2009-12-04 [▲.]: Thanks, Cilla! --And it really was a lot of fun!
2009-12-05 [hanhepi]: i didn't use any pictures on my wiki either viking, so don't feel too bad. mine is just a list of books i have that i want to (re)read in 2010. i actually thought about adding where in my house i can find the book, since i have them stashed all over, but i figure i can figure it out after i decide on a title. (speaking of which, i need to add more books to my list. oh well, maybe monday).
2009-12-05 [▲.]: I'll need to finish my list as well. I may end up adding more books.
2009-12-06 [Trennas]: I think my list will just assemble on the fly XD If I plan to actually do something like reading a specific book, chances are that I'm not feeling like doing it any more by the time I have to do it XD
2009-12-06 [hanhepi]: ah. my problem is i usually read at night, while my hubby is asleep. all the books are in our room, so it's just really inconvenient to have to play "i was going to read a book, but which one was it again?" in the dark.
2009-12-07 [Cillamoon]: LOL, love the last comment hanhepi! I can't tell you how many times I've done that myself! XD
2009-12-07 [Trennas]: but.. you can't really read in the dark anyway now can you? :p
2009-12-07 [hanhepi]: i have a lamp on my side of the bed, but due to the retarded nature of my house, the only spot for the bookcase was on his side of the bed. my little 60 watt bulb won't quite light up the book case enough for me to see the titles of all the books. (and the lower shelves you have to do pretty much by "feel and guess" even in the daytime. lol.)
2009-12-08 [Caterin S.]: Ahh, just had to join in. :) There are still quite a few unread books in my bookshelf, so this is good way to get me through them. :D
2009-12-08 [Cillamoon]: Welcome!
2009-12-11 [Duke Devlin]: Sorry for the late reply, nine., but Thank you! :D
Also, I may have stolen your picture idea. :P
2009-12-11 [▲.]: Oh, fantastic, Duke! It was actually a lot of fun!!
2009-12-11 [Duke Devlin]: I agree! :P But I'm gonna have to find the images of all 52 books I intend to read. :P Haha
2009-12-11 [Ghost the Hybrid]: i have a question, then you say book so you only count books like sherlock holmes and harry potter or does manga books also count? i know it might be a stupid question but i'm thinking bout joining but i wanna know what you count as book before deciding how many books to read
2009-12-11 [Viking]: Well, two of the books on my planned reading list are graphic novels, so I'd say that manga counts just fine =)
2009-12-11 [Easterling]: If manga novels counts just fine, then the apocryphal books of the OT must count, too, right?
2009-12-11 [Ghost the Hybrid]: well i got about 250 manga books in my bookshelf. that only leaves 2 shelfs for other books, got eragon, harry potter, shelock holms and twilight there
2009-12-11 [Viking]: The apocryphal books count too, I think. But I think we determined earlier that to be a "book" it must by a physical volume. So if the apocryphal books are all together in one volume, then it's only one book.
2009-12-11 [Easterling]: So how many words must the book contain?
2009-12-11 [Ghost the Hybrid]: i'm a bit confused now...would volume 1 of a manga book count as pocket book then?
2009-12-11 [Viking]: I don't know if there's any minimum number of words.
2009-12-11 [Viking]: Er...a book is a physical thing. If it has 1 novel in it or 7 novels in it, it's still a single book.
2009-12-12 [Easterling]: The wisdom of Jesus Syrak might have more words than a manga book, you know! x) But all right, I won't discuss this any longer, it's not that important.
2009-12-12 [Ghost the Hybrid]: just thought of something else, does the holy bible count as 1 book? or the coran(sp?)?
2009-12-12 [Easterling]: That depends on how you see it, Yume. The name "Bible" means "books" and in it there are 66 books. But of course, these books are included in one book, and they're all together the word of God.
2009-12-12 [Viking]: This is a book (regardless of how much or how little is in it):
These are books (even if what is in them is usually thought of as a single unit):
2009-12-12 [Ghost the Hybrid]: i know, just wondered if the bible did count as one or not, i know that it is a book but i didn't know if it counted as one if you felt like reading it as part of your challenge^^'
2009-12-12 [Easterling]: Maybe it's considered to be one book, if you have the whole volume with every book included. But if you have let's say the new testament, the prophets and the Psalms in separate volumes it'll count as 3 books. x)
2009-12-12 [Ghost the Hybrid]: i wheren't planing to just being curious here
2009-12-12 [Easterling]: I understand. :)
2009-12-12 [Ghost the Hybrid]: oh yeah i got another question, does the book have to be in/translated into english?
2009-12-12 [▲.]: I'm sure that you can read whichever you like. Especially if you're not from a country that has English as its native language. So just read a book in any language and write a review for it as though it were.
2009-12-12 [Ghost the Hybrid]: cool, cause one of the books i've thought bout adding to my "have to read" is a book that i wanna reread. it's a book of Astrid Lindgren(the author of the famouse Pippi Longstocking) but i don't know if it's translated into english
2009-12-12 [All_Most PUNK]: No, books don't have to be translated. They happen to still be books even when they are not in English.
Of course the Bible counts as a book, but as just one, no matter how it is separated or how the parts that form it are called. It's an integral piece.
I disagree with graphic novels: they are not books, but glorified comic books and you wouldn't count comic books. But I leave it to every persons criteria. Personally, I won't count them.
And, finally, I think that while 1 book is one book (and it doesn't matter the ammount of words, it has more to do with the fact that it's one complete work), there are 2 specific cases when it's completely up to you if you count them as one or several: duologies, trilogies and such (like LoTR) and books that contain several novels that are usually published as separated works. This last case, particularly, I would count as several books without a doubt, since they are intented to be several books and are together just as a way to cheapen their cost.
2009-12-12 [Ghost the Hybrid]: so basicly it's up to each person to decide if a graphic novel is a book or not? but technically it is a pocket book and pocket books do count as a book, my conclusion is that manga books is books^^'
2009-12-12 [Easterling]: I think we define this a little different, and maybe it doesn't matter either considering it's your own challenge and you decide yourself how much you want to read.
I'm still hesitating if I should join or not... :P
2009-12-12 [Ghost the Hybrid]: yeah me too^^'
2009-12-12 [All_Most PUNK]: Pretty much. though the fact that it can be read in about 10 minutes kinda goes against the "challenge" part of the wiki name :p
2009-12-12 [Ghost the Hybrid]: how about reading 250 manga books in 1 year, does that fit the challenge?
2009-12-12 [Duke Devlin]: Join Easterling! :P
2009-12-12 [Easterling]: I understand what you mean, Punk. That's what made me hesitate, too - What if I decided to read a thin book one week? and Do I have to only read books around 300 pages? I have a few books in mind that I'm going to read, soon, but they're not all as thick as "The Brothers Karamazov".
2009-12-12 [Easterling]: Maybe after a year it'll smooth out, y'know - I might read three short books and one really thick.. I guess it's not going to be a problem in the end, either, because you write down openly what kind of books you choose. If I only have thin books on my list after the year, and someone else have a lot of thick books, it's clear to everyone who has gone through the greater challenge.
2009-12-12 [Easterling]: But it's not certain that you go through a thick book faster than a thin one, either..
2009-12-12 [Viking]: But it's not really a competition! You're supposed to challenge yourself not other people!
2009-12-12 [Easterling]: Now I'm in! :)
2009-12-12 [Easterling]: No, exactly, it's not going to be a problem, I don't think so either. :)
2009-12-12 [Ghost the Hybrid]: i still can't decide if i should join or not
2009-12-12 [Easterling]: Do it, Yume! :) Make a try.
2009-12-12 [Duke Devlin]: Join Yume. :) It's always nice to see people trying! :D <3
2009-12-12 [Ghost the Hybrid]: well i could join, i know 5 books i wanna join with. can you add books if you finish before the year ends?
2009-12-12 [All_Most PUNK]: No, this if for 2010 :P
2009-12-12 [Ghost the Hybrid]: i mean that if i choose to read for example to read 5 books in 2010 and then finishes them can i then add more books to my list then?
2009-12-12 [All_Most PUNK]: Sure. You don't actually have to make a list. I won't, for example, since I have no idea what I'll buy and read tomorrow. You just put down the ammout you challenge yourself to read and then add them as you read them. If you want to planify and write the list before, that's ok too, though.
2009-12-12 [Ghost the Hybrid]: oh ok
2009-12-13 [Duke Devlin]: See, I've only listed some because I know they are some of the books I intend to read in the future. :)
2009-12-13 [Ghost the Hybrid]: cool
2009-12-14 [Captain Rachel Black]: WEEEEEEEEEEE!
2009-12-14 [Viking]: Does that mean you're joining us, Cap'n?
2009-12-14 [Cillamoon]: That would be awesome to have the Cap'n in on this also! Whatcha say Rache? Pleeeeeeeeease
2009-12-14 [sweet.tx.tea]: Jooooooin uuuuuuuus! :]]] I am updating my list this afternoon.
2009-12-14 [Cillamoon]: Gah, I guess that means I need to actually devote some plotting time to my series of books for this year. xp
2009-12-14 [Duke Devlin]: Nah you don't. :P Haha just go with the flow. :D
2009-12-14 [Cillamoon]: Yeah, that was the way I had wanted to do it originally, but now I think I want to make my books wiki page all jazzy. ^_^
2009-12-14 [Duke Devlin]: Why not do it after you read the book? :D
2009-12-15 [Captain Rachel Black]: I is joining yesh (plots whilist giggling evilly)
2009-12-15 [Duke Devlin]: Excellent. >:)
2009-12-15 [Cillamoon]: muhahahahahaha
2009-12-15 [Duke Devlin]: XD Glad to hear it. ;D
2009-12-30 [windowframe]: <insert comment of the nature that people should be excited and reminded of the imminent beginning of this year-long event, and do something or other in preparation.>
2009-12-30 [Viking]: Wooohooooo!
2009-12-30 [hanhepi]: *does happy dance*
*gathers books in piles near my bed*
2009-12-30 [Easterling]: :D
2009-12-30 [Mirime]: Ooh, it's almost January! I just couldn't wait to read my first book of the holiday, though.
2009-12-30 [All_Most PUNK]: I have 15 books wich I've read up to the last 20 pages. I think I'll manage to read like 20 books on January thanks to that! :D
2009-12-30 [Easterling]: xD
2009-12-30 [Duke Devlin]: :D :D :D :D Haha I am so damn excited to actually complete this! XD I want it to be 2011 already XD
2009-12-31 [▲.]: For real! xDD
2010-01-02 [sweet.tx.tea]: Easterling, you are insane. >.<
2010-01-02 [Easterling]: I'm not insane! I just found a good and funny book! :D
2010-01-03 [▲.]: HOLY CRAP. I CAN START. YESSSS.
2010-01-03 [Duke Devlin]: Holy crap Lami and Easterling have already read one. D:
2010-01-03 [Linderel]: Well, that's because we had both read our books near to the end :P Or, well, at least I had, and I'm pretty sure I remember her saying something along those lines.
2010-01-04 [Caterin S.]: Ah, the first one done. :) And it wasn't as hard as I remembered.
2010-01-04 [Easterling]: Yes, I started reading that book a couple of days before new year's eve. But it wasn't really a hard read either.. :)
2010-01-05 [hanhepi]: i discovered yesterday i suck at writing a review. :/ i've now finished the second book of my challenge, but can't get the review of the first one done. lol
2010-01-05 [Easterling]: I don't even know if I should write reviews of some of the books I've read. The second book, for example, is only published in Swedish, I think. :P
2010-01-05 [hanhepi]: there are lots of swedes on this site who might find the review helpful. :)
2010-01-05 [sweet.tx.tea]: I am completely jealous of those who have had the time to already complete books. You...>.<
2010-01-05 [Viking]: I started mine on New Year's Eve, when I had a cold and had nothing better to do =P
2010-01-05 [sweet.tx.tea]: Daaaaw! Well, that's a might good reason, though I am sorry for you having a cold.
2010-01-05 [hanhepi]: i was able to read lots because Randy monopolized the TV all day sunday, and our cable went out last night. XD
2010-01-10 [hanhepi]: i got more books today, including The Complete Sherlock Holmes, in hard back, for $1. also got Dune, and a Norman Mailer book, and an Orson Scot Card book that looks like it might be a regular historical fiction, which has me confused. (i paid 25 cents each for the 2 paperbacks. woo hoo! i love the 1/2 price sale at my local thrift store!)
2010-01-10 [Easterling]: Sherlock Holmes! :)
2010-01-10 [hanhepi]: i've never read them! i've watched a few movies (Without A Clue being my favorite, too bad i don't think it was a real Sherlock Holmes story.) because my Grammie was really in to detective stories, but for a dollar, it's certainly worth trying. :)
2010-01-10 [Easterling]: It's a classic.
2010-01-14 [Mirime]: how long should the reviews be? I'd be happy writing a few sentences underneath each book entry.
2010-01-14 [All_Most PUNK]: The length doesn't matter a lot, I think (silvie will correct me... and yell FASCIST to, if I'm wrong) but the important thing is to do them with reviews feature in your house :)
2010-01-14 [windowframe]: What Pubky said. But he's still a FASCIST.
2010-01-14 [All_Most PUNK]: :S
2010-01-18 [All_Most PUNK]: I'm above the average needed to reach the 100 books :D
2010-01-18 [hanhepi]: to punk: :P i'm still behind my average.
2010-01-18 [Viking]: I'm slightly ahead of my pace for 52 books =)
2010-01-18 [hanhepi]: well, :P to you too then.
2010-01-18 [All_Most PUNK]: You should read more, then! :P
2010-01-18 [hanhepi]: i think i've only skipped my nighttime reading twice so far. i've just been really tired, and only making about 20 pages before i fall asleep.
this saturday i did read just over 250 pages in the 6 hours i spent reading.
2010-01-18 [sweet.tx.tea]: I've been sick. :/ My eyes water when I read! :/
2010-01-18 [hanhepi]: oh, that really sucks! :( i'd normally put "*hugs*" there, but, you're sick, i don't wanna get near you...umm... *waves compassionatel
2010-01-19 [sweet.tx.tea]: Daaaaaw! XD *le squeak*
2010-01-19 [All_Most PUNK]: I think that with the novel I started yesterday (Gaiman's American Gods) I'll be in troubles to keep the 3 days schedule :O
2010-01-19 [Trennas]: <3 American Gods :D
2010-01-19 [hanhepi]: long book, eh? yeah, me too... i grabbed one of the new books i bought... it's 700+ pages.
2010-01-19 [Viking]: I've got a shorter one this time - Practical Demonkeeping by Christopher Moore. It's about 250 pages, but the print is rather large. I could easily read one of his books on a Saturday afternoon if I'm not doing anything else.
2010-01-19 [hanhepi]: ah, a self help book is it? could be a handy book to have around. XD
2010-01-19 [sweet.tx.tea]: Hahaha! IcanhazDEMON?
2010-01-19 [All_Most PUNK]: Yeah, AMerican Gods is aroun 700 pages.
The two spanish ones I read where about 240 pages (read one and a half on Sunday).
2010-01-19 [Viking]: I wish it were an instruction manual. I'd love to have a demon!
2010-01-19 [sweet.tx.tea]: NEWS FLASH: There has been a new addition to ET; you can now collect and use Demons to protect your house. Lolz.
2010-01-19 [Viking]: I already have monkeys for that...
But one demon can do the work of many monkeys. And without the bananas...
2010-01-19 [Cillamoon]: Oooooooooo!!!! Jane, will you be my demon protector darling? (lol)
2010-01-19 [sweet.tx.tea]: Why of course! Apparently this counts as summoning?
2010-01-19 [Cillamoon]: Aye it does darling one. ;)
2010-01-20 [▲.]: Summonniinnggg
2010-01-28 [All_Most PUNK]: I'm well above average :D 3 books above par!
2010-01-28 [hanhepi]: :P
i'm flyin through this one though.(i still need to write a review of the last one. whoops) i've been reading it for 10 days and i'm on page 517. i'll probably be able to start a new book this weekend. :)
2010-01-28 [All_Most PUNK]: I had a looong bus travel today to visit some of my clients. Read about 200 pages already of a book (I was on page 80 when I left my home) and it's only 1:30 pm :D So, probably one more book tonight.
2010-01-28 [hanhepi]: :P
2010-01-28 [Viking]: I've been reading a bit while riding my bike on the Cycle-Ops trainer.
2010-01-28 [All_Most PUNK]: One more in the sack! :D
2010-02-01 [hanhepi]: woo hoo! i got two more done. :)
2010-02-28 [nehirwen]: Featured Wiki!
2010-02-28 [*Phoenix*]: since I just joined can I claim books I finished in January?
2010-02-28 [windowframe]: Sure, if you can remember what they were, then I don't see why not. :)
2010-02-28 [*Phoenix*]: cool. Thanks!
I take it mangas don't count or do they??
2010-03-01 [windowframe]: I knew someone would have to mention comics/managas eventually. :P
Personally, I don't mind, the idea is to get people reading, and I think mangas and comics can be just as intellectual stimulating as a lot of books. On another site where I run the same kind of thing, I know a lot of people there count 3-5 mangas as one book, due to the length difference.
2010-03-01 [*Phoenix*]: That would make sense. So just personal judgment on that then?
2010-03-01 [windowframe]: Yeah. I trust you. ;)
2010-03-01 [Ghost the Hybrid]: can i join?
2010-03-01 [*Phoenix*]: okies!
2010-03-01 [Ghost the Hybrid]: cool
2010-03-01 [Linderel]: Durrr, I don't think you have to ask whether you can join. This is open for everyone. :P
2010-03-01 [Ghost the Hybrid]: yeah but i thought that you only could join at the start of the year-_-'
2010-03-01 [Viking]: It says right up there in the FAQ:
Q: It's February/March
A: Sure. But take when you're starting into consideration when deciding your goal.
So just note the date you joined an go from there.
2010-03-01 [Linderel]: Erm, this question is addressed in the FAQ. xD
2010-03-01 [Linderel]: *twitches* I will never understand the silly format of month/day/year
2010-03-01 [Viking]: month/day/year is standard in the US, but it has never made any sense to me.
2010-03-01 [Ghost the Hybrid]: sorry but i didn't see that, oh well, it's year/month/day here
2010-03-01 [Linderel]: Silly Americans.
2010-03-01 [Viking]: Considering that [windowframe] did not elaborate on the date format, I think you can use whatever you like.
2010-03-01 [Ghost the Hybrid]: not really, we should just put it like 1may 2010 instead and everyone gets it...that's what i usually does^^'
2010-03-01 [nehirwen]: I always read 01/01/10 as day/month/year
2010-03-01 [All_Most PUNK]: I read like Nehir.
2010-03-01 [Linderel]: So do I.
2010-03-01 [All_Most PUNK]: We are normal, smart people.
2010-03-01 [windowframe]: It would be very confusing if someone people were using dd/mm/yyyy and some people were using mm/dd/yyyy, so I think it's best to stick to dd/mm/yyyy . (I'm tired of having the former inflicted upon me, and thus I shall inflict the latter upon everyone in revenge <_<)
But whilst we're ranting about date formats, yyyy/mm/dd really annoys me. Usually, the last thing I want to know is the year. I want to know what the day is, and then, if I'm really forgetful, maybe the month too.
2010-03-01 [Ghost the Hybrid]: well since dateformates cinfuses me i put it like this ex. 1 march 2010 online then no one gets it wrong^^'
2010-03-01 [windowframe]: That's the format I use on Competitions as well to avoid confusion (and I think it's the format we should use for all contest deadlines, but I seem to remember people disagreeing with me about that one <_<)
2010-03-01 [Ghost the Hybrid]: i agree with you tho, of two reasosn, 1. avoid confusion and mix ups, 2. it's easier
2010-03-01 [Easterling]: *gasps* I'm really behind Punk now! (I blame my new hobby of knitting.)
